In order to liven up a university lecture on natural science, Dr Steve Furness embarked on a quest for some exciting visuals. He couldn’t have known how a trip to the university slide library would change the way he perceived his field entirely. Furness had discovered the fascinating world of macro photography – and now with the professional E-3 in hand, he’s taking his educational work a step further.
Since that decisive day at university, Furness has relied on a wide range of Olympus cameras – from compacts to professional-level D-SLRs – for macro photography that has brought him and his students even closer to the organisms they study. Mesmerising shapes and colours depicting the tiniest aspects of nature, such as a bee’s detailed interaction with a flower, usually dominate Furness’ shots.
Having little to no control over the elements he captures, Furness has to rely on equipment that doesn’t give in to dust, wind or moisture. That’s why the professor and environmental activist says he’s most excited about the E-3’s unique versatility: “The whole system is small, portable and easy to use, and features the best anti-dust device that I’ve ever seen”.
